Users experiencing frequent disconnections

We have a Mac user connecting through the Pritunl client with Okta SSO, primarily over a home Wi-Fi network (with separate 2.4GHz and dual-band 2.4/5GHz bands). She experiences random VPN disconnections, especially during Zoom meetings and while working in tools that require a VPN connection. The issue began in August 2024 and has persisted daily despite extensive troubleshooting.

We’ve tried reinstalling the Pritunl client, re-importing VPN profiles (both standard and static), temporarily disabling MFA, tuning MTU settings (finding 1438 as optimal), and adjusting client settings like tun-mtu, mssfix, fragment, and blocking IPv6. While some of these changes slightly improved stability, the disconnects continue. Logs frequently show timeout errors when connecting to the VPN server over port 443. No obvious network or firewall misconfigurations have been found.

What else can we do to troubleshoot?

Switching the server to TCP may provide more reliable connections. If they are outside the US or on a cellular based connection there may be carrier-grade NAT that will often cause these problems. A high MTU won’t be more reliable then a lower one, attempting to push it to 1438 shouldn’t be done. The maximum connection MTU that should be configured in the settings is 1400.
